In 2014 I spent several months reporting for Ideastap, a charity and network that worked with leading arts organisations to create industry opportunities for members. The team and I were commissioned to produce a series of discursive podcasts on issues relevant to members – from amateur and professional artists to creative practitioners. Topics included dealing with failure, giving up your day job and how to make it in an increasingly competitive world. Interviewees included comedian Adam Kay, artist Yinka Shonibare MBE and photographer/reporter Christian Payne.

Here's one we made earlier:

Music has been lifelong passion of mine. Listening to it. Writing about it. Playing it. I owe much of my education – in the broadest sense – to musicians, mixtapes and club culture. In the outernational spirit of Straight No Chaser magazine, my home for five years, I occasionally put together a few sets. Here is a selection of my most recent podcasts together with the occasional live show and interview special. In 2020, I became a host on Boxout FM presenting a new show called Moonbeam Levels.

Head to my page for episodes and tracklists. The archive below contains more than a decade’s worth of shows. Dig in and message me @amarofpatel if you like the sound. I'm dedicated to supporting new talent and interested in hearing about new broadcasting opportunities.

In March 2019 a feature-length radio documentary about genius producer, composer and arranger Charles Stepney premiered on Worldwide FM as part of a three-hour birthday special. I wrote the script and co-produced with presenters Kam and Leanne.

In 2020, I was commissioned by Broccoli Content to write and voice a piece on the theme of “home” for their wonderful Anthems series. I chose to riff on this idea of belonging, something many of us find hard to do – particularly children of immigrants. But also the floaters, non-conformists, lone wolves, wonderers and wanderers out there.

I cover much ground in 7m 30s, from growing pains in Brighton and trying to flee the nest, to pondering the deeper meaning of TV show The Littlest Hobo and turning to wise ones John O’Donohue and Maya Angelou for answers.

Into 2022, I have been scriptwriting podcasts for Broccoli’s Cancelled series, which tells the stories of controversial attempts to cancel celebrities, companies and brands. At their best, these episodes go beyond sanctimonious witch hunts and retrospective mob justice. They allow us to consider history with fresh eyes/ears and to get a better understanding of the culture part. The darker forces at play in politics and society. This one is about Janet Jackson’s infamous wardrobe malfunction at the Superbowl in 2004. How a viral TV moment and a personal vendetta derailed one artist's career, boosted another and inflamed the war on indecency in the US. #Nipplegate also gave us YouTube. Short but with a long tail and quite entertaining, I promise.

And this one is about The Chicks, formerly known as The Dixie Chicks, who came under fire in 2003 after a fleeting anti-war protest on stage in London. Almost overnight, country music’s darlings became disgraced “Saddam Lovers”. Was this the first internet cancellation? A curious lens through which to consider free speech, patriotism, the mechanics of a boycott and the consequences of dissent.
